We went to Ford. We all got hired at Vine to go to Ford.

You all got hard?

Yeah, we all got hired to get hard. We all sat around, um, and we wanted to see who had the biggest boner. But no, we all got hired to go to Ford and go to the car show in Detroit. And we all were making Vines and we all did our job. And then at the end of the day, there was like still time before the flight. So they were like, we're going to take you over to Ford. And then the people at Ford like treated us like kids. They were like, okay, now you have to like listen to us. And, and Jerry Burbank was like, I don't need to listen to this. He's like, I already, I already did my work.

That's really funny.

That's so funny. And so the guy from Ford is like, yeah, so basically we take fiber optics and we do regenerative braking and blah, blah, blah, blah. And Jerry just turns his— he just turns his chair and he just faces the other way.

He's like, hello, hello, you have to listen to this. You have to listen. We have you here. And it was like, no, he doesn't, dude. We're done.

Why that's like double, triple, quadruple funny in my opinion is because Vine was the first taste of like celebrity influencers. Yes. Like, YouTube wasn't— YouTube was so niche where they, like, you weren't like— how do I explain it?

It's just its own world, and it wasn't necessarily everybody watched YouTube.

YouTube also didn't come with egos, I feel like, right? Yeah. Like, YouTube was like, it was like so niche where like the people on there were still— they were— everyone on YouTube was kind of like I'm at home making a video. But like Vine was like, everyone blew up so quickly. We're like, yeah, you had like a Jerry who was almost the same attitude of a rapper.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Right? Like it was like he would maybe buy himself something really nice or like he'd flex the chain. Like there were Viners that would like flex a chain. Not Jerry specifically, that would flex a chain or flex a car. But, and that wasn't a thing with YouTubers, I feel like yet. So like Viners were the first ones to do it.

Which is really interesting. Jerry turning his chair is like the— like, no YouTuber would do that at the time. That is only like— that is only, uh, I just blew up about a year ago and I'm on top of the world right now, and you go fuck yourself because you already paid me.

Wow, that's really fun. How much were they paying you for that brand deal?

I think I made like $10,000.

Do you remember when King Bach got that Jimmy John's deal?

I remember hearing it was $100 grand.

Yeah, because all of Vine was like— everybody was just like fucking— yeah, everybody's like, have you seen this Jimmy John's deal? Have you seen this Jimmy John's deal? It was a big, big fucking deal.

Yeah, Batch was the shit. I mean, he still is, but yeah, no, but that was like—

that was the biggest Vine deal at the time, dude. Those top guys on Vine were making so much— Logan— were making so much money.

Yeah, my favorite story with Lele Pons is me and Alex prank called her because we found her number from like a hacker once, and Lele picked up. I thought it was so cool. So rude of me, but that is what happened. Uh, Marcus Johns. Marcus Johns was the first Viner to hit a million followers. He was, which is such a big deal. Yeah, yeah. And he came over to play pickleball with me like a couple months ago.

I saw him. Yeah, I talked to him.

Really? That's a really crazy guy to see because it's that— and that was like the first time I've met him. Yeah, you know how crazy that is? Like, I idolized this guy. I was— I had 5,000 followers on Vine.

Yeah.

And he was hitting like 750,000, which was like way ahead of the pack. Yeah, actually, no, he was probably already at a million. And like, I idolized this guy so much. Like, I was like, this is the king of Vine, this is the king of Vine. And, and, and then I moved out because of Vine, and I didn't meet him for fucking 12 You've never met him? No.

Oh, he used to come over my house and play with my kids.

Yeah, because you were in the popular Vine group.

You were like the B-list of the A-list, right?

Yes, the B-list of the A-list.

That's where you were. You were probably like— yeah, that's funny. You ran with the coolest people on Vine.

I have the funniest video of— we did a whole day, me, Paige Kennedy, DeStorm, King Bach. They were all over at Marnie's house, like my ex-wife's house, which was a nice house, you know. And I used to have the funniest, like, interaction of Marnie coming home from work and all of them leaving at the same time, and Marnie being like, oh, hey, hi, um, okay, hi. And they're like, okay, see you later, Marnie. Okay, see you later. It's so fucking funny.

That's really fun. Yeah. What your wife was— what did your wife think about Vine?

She was just like, oh my God.

Yeah. Until when? Like, what was the moment where she was like, wait, you just made $10,000 at the Ford convention?

Yeah. I don't think she ever understood it. I think when I told her that I was making money, the first one was to go to a Hangover thing in Vegas. And I was like, yeah, it's like, it's like, you know, $7,000. And she was just like, you're lying. Like, no one's— no, no one's going to pay you that. Wow. No one.

I'm so grateful that we were there at the beginning of like social media. I'm so, so thankful for it. Like, yeah, like I— this wasn't too long ago, but like I would get offended when people would say that I'm going to get content somewhere. Like, I hated that word. I'm like, I'm not getting fucking content. Like, I'm going to live my life and also filming it. Like, I, I, and I truly believe this to this day.

Yeah.

And like, there was no differentiating for me, like, like the joy I had of real life and making videos. There is, there's no moment that like felt like begrudging, like I was like going into 9 to 5. So when someone said it was 100% work, right? It was 100% work, right? But like, it was such passion work where like when someone called it content and I was going to get content, I was like offended. And now that's the phrase that like influencers use about themselves. They're like, they'll be like, first I woke up and then I got— I went to go shoot some content with friends, right? And I'm like, oh, I don't know why, but it like irks me now.

What do you think of— what do you think of when you see like a —like a mainstream celebrity, like, grinding it out now on socials?

Um, it just depends. Like, there's like mainstream celebrities that do it really well. Like, one of my favorites is Stanley Tucci. Oh yeah, have you seen him do it? No. Oh, he like does like cooking videos.

Well, he has like a big show on CNN, right? He took—

that's the bald guy, right?

Yeah, he took Bourdain's spot basically.

Oh great, so he does the exact same thing on TikTok and he's cooking. Yeah.

Are they cutdowns of the show or like new TikToks?

No, no, no. It's just straight up off his phone. And so you're in his kitchen and he's like talking really slow and it's just like really captivating.

And like when you see something on socials and it's like shot really well, don't you prefer it shot on the phone?

I think it depends. It's case by case. Right. So I just did a brand deal with Microsoft. Yes.

Perfect example.

And they wanted to do it on like these nice cameras. And I'm like, I don't think I work on nice cameras. Right. Like, I like— Alex Earle works on nice cameras. Uh-huh. Although she has—

she has like a lo-fi podcast.

No, she has lo-fi, but I think she's so pretty and she's so, like, captivating to look at where I think it's nice to see her. It's nice to see her, like, sharpened, elevated. Yeah. But for me, I don't think people like— I don't think people look at me and they're like, I want to see David on the highest level of platform and like, I don't want to see him in the highest quality. Like, I think people like the more like, we're just hanging out, this is shot on the cell phone vibe with me. So I don't think— I think Alex blew up so quickly. Yeah. Where like, people love to see the progression of her. Yeah. So they get excited to see the high quality stuff with her, if that makes sense. Yeah. Like me, I think I've been doing this for way too long where people are like, yeah, like, okay, I've seen him do this high quality stuff, but I just wanna see him do like this. Like, I don't know.

That's just do his thing.

That's the way I perceive it. I don't know. I think it applies to like different people. And then I also, then what you say about celebrities doing social media, it's like, it's definitely like case by case. Like there's like, you ever see like press tours and like you'll see like Chris Pratt with like two of his co-stars, like making a, even just making a phone vertical video being like, 'Go see the movie.' Yeah, it's going to be like— and they make some kind of a joke. Yeah, like, that's like really cheesy. But also, like, they have to do so much press. Yeah. We're like, they don't give a fuck. Like, they're like, like, you know, like they don't give a fuck to make a TikTok video. And I don't blame them.

What about when you get asked to jump in a TikTok that you don't want to be in?

Uh, it depends. Is it a random person or is it you guys? If it's you guys, I don't want to do it. No, no. So John's mom has this TikTok account. Really? John's mom, like Filipino mom, has this incredible TikTok account. Really? Fuck, I don't even want to talk about it because like I want to randomly show up on it, right? But like she does these like incredible— she's so good at it. Like she's like genuinely having fun. Wow. It's like, you know, like with like, like you see a TikTok from a different country and it's just like a person, like the phone quality is a little different so you could tell it's not like, sure, like the most sharpened. And it's like, and it's just someone just having genuine joy making videos. That's what John's mom is.

It's like, so, so one is like, it's all songs. Oh, so the latest one I saw is her dancing to Taylor Swift's "Sophia." Really? You know that song? Yeah. It's incredible. It's just her dancing and like, wow, it's like a very like nice, like mom dance. And like, I really want to be in that. I really want to be in a TikTok with her. I don't want her to tag me or anything. I just want to be in it. I don't want people to know how I have any correlation to John's mom. So that's something I'm excited to do when we go to the Philippines. That's fun. That's gonna be on the top of my list.

Oh, I watched, um, as a favor to you, I went and I watched all the Avengers trailers this morning. What? Yeah, just so I could be like—

I thought I should go and look what you're so excited about.

But haven't you seen the movies?

Well, I saw— I watched the Thor trailer. Does Spider-Man have his own movie coming out?

What are you doing? Oh, the new ones. Yeah. Oh. So what's interesting, did you see what they— so, okay, okay, this is interesting what happened with the trailers. So Disney was taking down the trailers because it was leaked. Some guy in the movie theater went in and recorded the trailer off the screen because like obviously they send in the trailers a week before it comes out. So this guy posted it on TikTok. So I saw it leaked and like I saw, you know, scene by scene how it was. I saw the whole thing. And then obviously if you post that on YouTube Yeah, it gets taken down. So what someone did is they recreated the exact trailer, but with AI to the point where it was almost indistinguishable. But it wasn't Disney-made anymore. It was AI. What?

So like, so what I watched this morning is not—

there's a good chance you're the Thor trailer. You probably watched Thor, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Spider-Man, or AI. Doctor Doom, AI. Doctor Doom, you couldn't have watched the Doctor Doom trailer.

I watched it.

No, no, that was AI. That was 100% AI. Really? But what was interesting about the Captain America trailer that came out was it was AI, but it was 100% accurate to the real trailer that was leaked. So he recreated scene by scene using AI in 3 hours. It leaked and then 3 hours later it was up. And I remember because I watched it, I clicked, I'm like, oh wow, it's up on YouTube. It looks crystal clear. But things were off. Really? Like you couldn't see the reflection of Captain America in the window, or the way he takes his bike helmet off is backwards rather than it is— he's not putting it on the bike, he's taking it off the bike. And it was all because it was replicated by AI. But it's crazy. There's nothing he could do about it. There's nothing Disney could do about it because it's like, it's like, yeah, it's the idea, but it's not made by them at all. Wow. Yeah.

That's how scary— Spider-Man movie coming out. Is that AI? Yeah.

Like to this day, I thought it was one of those things that they were going to swap out after the theaters. Yeah. But like, to this day, you watch Endgame and Thor is playing Fortnite. How fucking crazy is that?

Why is that so crazy?

Because Fortnite's a thing that's like baked in reality. Like some, a real human being invented Fortnite not too long ago and they got put into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I think that's kind of fucking insane. Fortnite is like, it's so like, it's not like Pepsi or anything. It's like, Right. It's a fucking video game that's like for like 16, 18, 20-year-olds. I don't know. I think that's so bizarre.

Did you go to Avatar? The premiere? Yeah, but did you go and— you were so excited to see Avatar.

Oh yeah, yeah, I went to go see it. How was it? It was great. It was 3 hours and 15 minutes. I have, yeah, I have some— Woo! Yeah, it was good.

So I had to start playing it like that. That's really— well, how did your Quiplash game go? Oh, incredible.

For people that don't know, Quiplash is a game you can play on your TV. Everyone in the room connects their phones and basically they give you a prompt. So it's like the stupidest thing to go to jail for. And then, and then everyone has to type in something funny and then anonymously all those things will pop up on the TV and you have to choose what you think is the funniest. Yeah.

You're playing on your phone. Yeah. Yeah.

I didn't like what my brother started doing. I was pissing me off. Was like my brother didn't want me to win. Yeah. So my brother purposefully like saw something funny and was like, I'm not picking that. And I think people do do that. I know people do that. I know it's like a regular Quiplash thing. I do that too. Like, I do that like when I'm playing with John, like, and John's in the lead, like, I know, I know which ones are John's, right?

Like, obviously they're misspelled.

They're either misspelled or like, you know, it's like a John joke. Like, John would reference this. Yeah. Um, and then, yeah, and then you stop. That's, that's the key of Quiplash is like to win, you have to speak as someone else sometimes, right? Because people selfishly don't want a certain person to win. I put Jeff Epstein in a couple of my answers, like kind of slid them in there, and it didn't play. It didn't play. So I'm shocked that that got you an all hands on deck win. Yeah. Wow.

Oh, you really have to know your crowd. Yes, you're right. Older people, Epstein joke probably crushes, right? I think it's like too played out with the younger generation.

Joey showed me a meme. I don't know if you've probably seen it. I thought it was the funniest thing I've ever seen. It was like somebody was wishing someone else happy birthday and they wrote, cake and candles, my N-word. Have you seen that?

It's like a text exchange between two people. Someone writes, someone writes, cake and candles, my N-word. He's just basically wishing them happy birthday. And then the other— and then the person's like, can you just be normal? Can you just say happy birthday? That's what the text exchange says. And then the guy writes back, balloon. You didn't see that? No. Charlie showed it to me and Wyatt was like, oh yeah, I've seen that. That's really— I was like, huh? But it's so hard to like—

it's really funny, like, like how humor, how different humor is. Yeah. Like, even like, like I just hung out with my brother. Yeah. And like a catchphrase he says a lot, like nonstop. You won't even know this. You won't even know this because this is like so deep internet culture. But like, I'm lucky enough where I'm still picking it up, what he's saying. Yeah. But like, I'm shocked that he's using it day to day. He goes, "Fuck!" Have you seen that? Have you seen the thing that's like a— you haven't seen that sound? Like on Instagram?

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.

How does it go? You probably can do it better. I know. I— "Fuck!" You know what I mean? I know what you're talking about. Yeah, but it's like I've never heard anybody do it good to the point where the second time he said it, I knew what he was saying. The first time I was like, is that a reference to— because it's the sound. It's some guy saying fuck, but there's like a lot of reverb and it's like when something something bad happens, like, yeah, or like it'll pan to somebody and instead of using the iMovie sound, it'll be like, fuck. Yeah. Um, but like, I've never heard like a human say it. And my brother was saying it, I'm like, damn, this is like such a different world. Like, like when it's so funny, like, and every time I see my brother, it's like every couple months, like whatever, for like an occasion, or he'll come by the house and it'll be something new that he's like, that he's like picked up on. And it's very, it's very trendy. Like kids, like kids his age speak to the trends that are happening online. It's very interesting. Like, to me, they're just trends, right? But to him, it's changing his language as time is going, like, is going through. It's really interesting. Yeah.

Have you ever seen what a streamer will look like in 20 years?

Ever seen those projections? No.

Like, like hunched back and like long fingers and like hook nose.

That's really funny. I've been thinking about— okay, so I've been having this dilemma, and actually the podcast listeners can help me with this. So, and I want to, I want to like change the way I make videos. Have I told you this?

Yeah, you've mentioned it.

So like, I really want to like, okay, so I had this idea where like, it's not really an original idea, but I assume like once I do it, it will be original because like I'll put like my own, like my own voice onto it. But like, I want to like make, okay, I want to take like a trip to, to, to like, let's say to Rio de Janeiro. Like, that's like an exciting trip. And like, you know how like I'll have like a brand deal attached to a video. Yeah. And it'll be like, it'll be like someone will be getting a gift. I'll use all the money most likely on a gift. And like I was thinking, like instead of using the money on a gift, like why not use all the money for the production of the video? And that doesn't mean that the videos are going to look like Marvel movies, but that means that I bring 2 camera people with me, which is very expensive to bring to another country. To bring 2 camera people with you, to hire them for work and to house them and to fly them and to feed them, is very expensive, is the equivalent of a car. So like, instead of like getting someone a car, like, why don't I bring Ferris out who could film, and then another filmer to like Brazil and shoot a vlog that's like highbrow and it's like drone shots and it still has like the life of the videos that I have. Like, so it has like the fun music, the fun energy, but it's more like hangy-outy. Like, it's more like— it's like a 25-minute vlog, but it's like shot, you know, it's like you're there for the full adventure.

I think a longer video would be really good for you.

And I don't know, I just think it's like time to like do some kind of a different video.

I think so too.

And it's kind of like— it's kind of exhausting, the videos we shoot. Like, I like— I'm editing this video that we just shot, right, that I'm posting on the first. I mean, it's just like your typical vlog and I'm like cutting things out of it that I'm like, ah, like this is like, this isn't that funny, but it's kind of cool to like see like, like the jokes that I feel like a lot of times are really funny in vlogs are the ones that aren't like, like, okay, so like right now when I edit a vlog, I only put in the moments I laugh at that I genuinely find so funny.

The very, very best cream of the crop jokes you put in. Yeah. And you throw out a lot of—

Best jokes for us, not like best jokes for, you know, like best jokes that happened that week. Yeah. So like, I only put in the things that I'm laughing at, hence why you always hear me laughing at the end of things. But I think like you say, you especially say so many funny things, right? That like is just so normal to me because I'm with you. But it's like, but it's so, it's like, so I don't laugh at it per se, but I know it's funny. Sure. And like, I think it would, I think it like I think like the softer jokes would make the harder jokes hit better too. So like, I think it's kind of like, it's kind of interesting. Like, I like hanging out with you guys in reality. Right. What I'm trying to say. Right. So like, why don't I depict that reality to the best of my abilities and like show everything? Yeah.

So show like a moment we're arguing. Nothing funny happens. Right. We're arguing, we go to the next scene, and then maybe you say like a little small dig at Natalie. No one laughs, but it just continues to the next thing. Now we're boarding the plane.

I think that's a really good idea. I mean, I, I, I'm begging you to do more, to show more.

And I also don't want to hold the camera. I want to like— I kind of like the idea of having two camera guys. And like, and why I say it's not original, it's because it's going to— it's going to be shot like a Nelk video would be, or like any livestreamer's video or any YouTuber's video. It's so much pressure to like to try to get to that, the funniest joke in the funniest place. Like, it's like, we'll be like, we'll be, um, let's say we'll be at a castle in Hungary and it looks— everything looks really cool. And then we'll just sit outside the castle and we'll be like, how can we make something outside of the castle funny? When like, it shouldn't be like that. It should just be like, let's go into the castle. And like anything that happens outside of the castle, we— you— I don't know, it should just be like more— there's so much pressure in like making these videos where like, let's make— let's get a joke. Yeah, where I— where everything we naturally do is just funny because that's just how we interact. But like, I hold like certain jokes such a standard that I don't want to anymore.

Like I wouldn't be trying to get across like be healthier or whatever. So it'd be in the style of the docs where it's like, you know, you got your fun shots, but also, I don't know, just like a more mature version of whatever.

Would you do a storyline?

No, I'm not too good at that. Everyone always asks me, especially like people that know me, are always like, why don't you make a movie? Why don't you make a movie? And like, I just like don't know how. 'Cause a lot of like 80% of the ideas I have for vlogs. Yeah. So, okay, so this is the only reason I came up with the Seven Wonders idea. Let me play it. Yeah, so I was like, I want to go see— I heard this song and there was 7 beats in it. And I was like, what can I do with 7 beats? Because I really wanted to edit to this song. And I was like, okay, 7 wonders. So I had this idea the entire time. And here you're about to hear it. Hold on. It's coming. And I wanted every beat to be the shot of a new wonder. So this is me telling Ilya. Let's go see the Seven Wonders. And he's like, what, are you crazy? That's so much. We'll never be able to do it. I'm like, dude, come on. It'll be so much fun. I don't know, Dave. I don't know if I could do it. I have work. I have to pay rent. Boom. That's one wonder. And then two. Two.

And then this goes. And then here it starts music. And now you're seeing all the wonders, right? So I was like so excited about that, and I was like, fuck yeah, like I'm gonna do the 7 beats and then montage of the wonders. And then I started putting it together and I was like, this doesn't work at all for some reason. Why? It just— it was breathing too— it— oh, and it was my fault it didn't work because the shots itself weren't majestic enough to like fill to match the music. It just wasn't connecting for some reason. Like, the shot of the wonder, you couldn't see the wonder for too long. These beats were too far apart where it wasn't, it wasn't moving quick enough. So, so like, so I had to scrap the whole— that part of it, and I did instead, I did, uh, Holiday by Green Day for that montage, and because that moves so much quicker. And now I scrapped the whole idea of showing the Seven Wonders at once, and now I put together The wonder shots weren't interesting enough.

But I remember when you were editing it, you were like, I don't care about the wonders. Exactly.

Yeah, because I— why? Because, because I was— because, because the shots I got at the wonders weren't interesting enough. Hence what— why I'm going back to what I was saying before is why I could never make a movie is because I had this whole idea in my head, shot it, executed it very poorly, and then had to pivot in the edit. And like, I don't think you can do that so much when you're spending millions of dollars on production. You need a storyboard. Yeah. And I'm really scared that I'm absolutely god-awful at storyboarding because 75% of the times I have an idea in my head about something, it changes in the edit. And I don't know, maybe that's—

But I can't because that's just not how I think. Like, I like— that's just like, I just, I don't have like— I can't conceptualize.
